About - Dr Jayeshnee Moodley

A native of KwaZulu-Natal, Dr Moodley distinguished herself academically early on, earning her MBChB Summa Cum Laude from the University of KwaZulu-Natal, then deepening her specialization with a Masters (MMed) in Obstetrics and Gynaecology with a focus on Menopause. She is a Fellow of the College of Obstetricians & Gynaecologists of South Africa and completed the Advanced Health Management Programme at Yale University.

Dr Moodley has the distinction of being the first female obstetrician and gynaecologist in Zululand, marking a milestone not just for her career, but for access, representation, and trust in women’s healthcare in the region.

Since 2014 she has served as a clinical lecturer for the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) Medical School, inspiring the next generation of clinicians.

Her practice in Richards Bay – based at Melomed Hospital – is known for its holistic, patient-centred approach. Dr Moodley treats a wide spectrum of women’s health issues: from antenatal and obstetric care, through gynaecological disorders and cancers, menstrual disorders, heavy bleeding and chronic pelvic pain, to contraceptive counselling. She emphasises evidence-based medicine in a warm, family-oriented environment, always ensuring that patients are treated not just medically, but with dignity and understanding.

Beyond her clinic, Dr Moodley has made significant contributions to the wider Zululand community through outreach and public health initiatives. Her annual free pap smear drives, for example, have helped bring cervical cancer screening to underserved populations and detected early/pre-cancerous conditions that might otherwise have gone unnoticed. She also pioneered the introduction of skin-to-skin contact after caesarean delivery at Melomed Richards Bay, becoming the first hospital in Zululand to offer this practice, thereby improving the birthing experience both physically and emotionally.

She was adjudged Zululand Business Woman of the Year in 2017.
